DYN AMO

A film by Steve Dwoskin

Steve Dwoskin's DYN AMO is a visually rich and emotionally intense
film set in a Soho strip-joint. Following the routines of four
strippers as they divest themselves of their stage gear, the film
pivots around a central scene that articulates a brutal desire. This
film, along with other works by Dwoskin, prompted academic Paul
Willemen to write the article 'Voyeurism, The Look and
Dwoskin' (publ. After Image 6, 1976) which responded to Laura
Mulvey’s theory of three ‘looks’ and suggested a fourth: ’…
the look at the viewer must be added…’

‘…Dynamo marks something of a depature for Dwoskin in that it is
based on a stage play (by Chris Wilkinson). The action takes place in
a strip club, and begins with a realistic treatment of a stripper
going through her routine - complete with the dead moments between
records that leave both the performer and the audience feeling a
little ridiculous. Two more strippers perform, but the Pop music on
the soundtrack is replaced by Gavin Bryars' surrealistic score, and
the routines become increasingly fantasised. Is it the strippers'
fantasy we are watching? Or the audience's? Or the fllmmakers?...’
Clive Hodgson, Oz magazine, November 1972.

This special screening is presented by LUX and Re:Voir, Paris, to
