WHITECHAPEL FILM PROGRAMME
Thu 20 Jul, 7pm
Marcel Odenbach
Widely regarded as one of Germany’s most important artists in the
medium, Marcel Odenbach’s videos have rarely been shown in the UK.
Positioning himself, and thus the spectator, in the role of observer,
witness, or voyeur, his work is a stunning and highly charged inquiry
into subjectivity - personal and cultural memory, individual and
collective history, past and present - through developed formal
strategies and a disorientating juxtaposition of images and registers.
The distance between myself and my losses (1983) locates the
construction of self and identity in the realm of vision, creating an
enigmatic memory theatre of popular and historical representation.
The Romantic opera of Schubert's Erl King alternates with Burundi
funeral songs while the screen is masked by horizontal and vertical
bands of black, partially blocking the image. The visible slivers -
archival footage that suggests a Leni Riefenstahl film, pornography,
playing cards, manipulated objects - are rendered even more
provocative by their seeming censorship. The self is only partially
visible and partially knowable.
This stunning work is shown alongside companion pieces such as As if
memories could deceive me (1986) in which a piano keyboard, symbol of
German bourgeois tradition, is the metaphorical ground upon which
Odenbach devises a dynamic associative discourse that, from ornate,
19th-century Baroque architecture to a contemporary menswear
emporium, traces an historical trajectory of cultural excess. Ständig
auf dem Sprung sein (1995) marks the 50th anniversary of the UN,
fusing contemporary and archival footage into a charged visual
metaphor of political tension. The programme ends with the recent
work, Malestory 2 (2005).

between myself and my losses, 1983, 11mins / As if memories could

BUCK 65 vs. Eraserhead
"Basically, I'm going to use turntables a sampler, some junk, a
hammer, a bucket of water and a custom pump organ to provide a new
score for David Lynch's ERASERHEAD. I'm looking to match the darkness
and weirdness of the film with the ‘music’ and add my own stamp to
it. There will be dust and drums and tortured steel. I hope to make
it a nightmare that people will not want to awaken from..." (Buck 65)
Canadian-born, Paris-based leftfield hip hop genius meets David
Lynch's surrealist masterpiece head on in this battle of wits to out-
weird each other! Buck 65's love of hip hop is coupled with his love
of Tom Waits and hard rock anthems, and his collaborative work
includes The Beastie Boys, Radiohead, Seasame Street, and Biz Markie.
Fans include Aphex Twin and Vincent Gallo, both similarly
uncompromising, and Buck's own heroes range from MixMaster Mike to
Spiderman to the aforementioned David Lynch.
ERASERHEAD (David Lynch, 1976, US)
This film needs no introduction, other than to say it took five years
to make and broke up the director’s marriage. On it's 1976 release
it's weird logic and surrealist take on nuclear families, parenthood,
sexuality and urban life caused shockwaves in punk strewn Britain,
and the film remains today a cult and inspiring debut for new
generations of artistes in both film and music.
Buck 65 will also separately perform spoken word as part of the event.
Andrew Kotting: IN THE WAKE OF A DEADAD
Andrew Kotting’s idiosyncratic and wayward style has long been a
strong presence in British independent filmmaking, especially since
his acclaimed 1996 feature GALLIVANT. Since 2003 he has been AHRC
research fellow at the University College for the Creative Arts. IN
THE WAKE OF A DEADAD is the first presentation of a new body of work
made during his fellowship.
IN THE WAKE OF A DEADAD is Kotting’s powerful, often uncomfortable
reflection on the recent death of his father – his ‘Deadad’. It’s a
journey through the psychogeography of personal memories, hidden
histories, loss and reconciliation, including two large inflatable
sculptures bearing the images of Kotting’s father and grandfather.
These tombstone shaped portable monuments toured the world with
Kotting to locations significant in their and his lives, the giant
inflations will be brought to the Hayward to create both a comic and
melancholic performance.
BUZZARD & SASSOON'S AUDIO-VISUAL SWAP SHOP present SURREALISM REMIXED
VJ Buzzard Buzzard and laptop maestro Gadi Sassoon are a duo who
create high-energy AV improvised mash-ups. Tonight they’ll be
attacking the classic surrealist canon to immerse you in an eye-
popping visual extravaganza to arouse the flesh.
animate! presents THE NEW FLESH INCARNATE!
animate! tv has commissioned 78 risk-taking films since 1990, funded
by Arts Council England and Channel 4 Television, refreshing,
expanding and redefining animation. This special programme from the
animate! catalogue ventures into flesh narrative territories and
visual forms way beyond the frame-by-frame confines of conventional
animation, chosen to reflect Battaile’s obsessions with sex and death
– from the outrageous bestialities of COWBOYS through the menstrual
visions of CAGE OF FLAME and the sexualised cityscapes of WHAT SHE
WANTS to the darkly erotic fetishes of 'exotic' cultures in the
Brothers Quay's THE PHANTOM MUSEUM. Also includes the visceral
EXPELLING THE DEMON premiered at Nick Cave's Meltdown.
Films screening:
15TH FEBRUARY (Tim Webb)
CAGE OF FLAME (Kayla Parker)
COWBOYS (Phil Mulloy)
EXPELLING THE DEMON (Devlin Crow)
KINGDOM PROTISTA (Andrew Kotting)
PERPETUAL MOTION IN THE LAND OF MILK AND HONEY (Al + Al)
ROTTING ARTIST (Ann Course / Paul Clark)
THE PHANTOM MUSEUM (Brothers Quay)
WHAT SHE WANTS (Ruth Lingford)
PAUL BUCK
Paul Buck is the English voice of cult Belgium avant-garde
experimental outfit 48 Cameras. Acclaimed for his Artaudian, Sadean -
style vocalisations often compared to Diamanda Galas, his
performances are packed with sexuality and the exploding power of
language, which he makes fight for its life. Paul has an amazing
treasure-trove of work, from performance art, film, media, to writing
and translations. He has worked with Marc Almond, made two albums
with Melinda Miel, written over 50 books, including The Honeymoon
Killers, Lust, Violations and Walking with Myself. Most of these are
heavy sexual novels, plus he has translated Bataille and created the
Bataille Festival in London, titled Violent Silence.
STORY OF I (Jo Ann Kaplan)
This rarely-seen free improvisation on Georges Bataille's infamous
Histoire de l’Oeil is a gender twisting meditation on the erotic
extremities of human desire. A highly explicit journey through the
sexual foundations of Western visual culture and the intimate
terrains of male and female bodies.
VIDEODROME (David Cronenberg, 1983)
Cronenberg's seductively sinister early eighties cult classic stars
James Woods and Debbie Harry in a viscerally visionary tale of snuff
movie extremity, delirious priesthoods of the new media age and the
terminal possibilities of the human body. Way ahead of it's time, it
remains deeply unsettling viewing, a perverse parable of the
unsettling limits of power's encounter with flesh.
